With CAHMS services currently oversubscribed nationally and school and college counselling services mainly offering brief therapeutic interventions and carrying long waiting lists, parents are increasingly turning to private practitioners for therapy for their children. The services of therapy practitioners willing to work privately with this group are increasingly in demand. Working privately with children and young people is a rewarding experience for practitioners but also presents difficulties not usually encountered by therapists in statutory or institutional settings. This book offers clear guidance to both novice and experienced therapists alike, helping them negotiate the process of setting up or adapting their existing private practice to include children and young people. It coherently and systematically addresses the difficulties and complexities which practitioners may encounter when offering this important service as part of their private practice. The book contains chapters covering topics such as assessment, working with risk, ethics and confidentiality as well as guidance on when to include other family members in the work. With a clear structure encompassing current relevant legal information and with case examples throughout, this book constitutes a comprehensive guide for therapy practitioners wanting to offer an ethical and effective private counselling service for children and young people
