Der Band untersucht den Ausbau- und Standardisierungsprozess der neugriechischen Schriftsprache zwischen 1780 und 1930. Im Vordergrund stehen dabei die Diglossie-Verhältnisse, u.a. die systemischen und funktionalen Differenzen zwischen zwei Sprachvarianten (High und Low), sowie die Sprachideologie. Beide prägten im Zuge einer kulturell-ideologischen Fixierung der griechischen Gesellschaft auf der H-Variante das allgemeine Sprachverhalten. Die Diglossie als ideologisches Konstrukt erlangte erst nach der Staatsgründung von 1830 an Bedeutung, sodass der daraus entstandende Sprachenstreit den Standardisierungsprozess letztlich destabilisierte und verzögerte.
