In deciding on the general nature and scope of the commentary I have been especially inżuenced by the General Remarks of Mr. Grandgent, in his Synopsis of the French and German Instruction in the Boston High Schools (school Document No. 14, a pamphlet which ought to receive the careful attention of every instructor of elementary and secondary classes. In the matter of details I was much aided by the edition of Mlle. De la Sezglzlére by K. A. Martin Hartmann (leipzig, For many valuable suggestions and criticisms I am indebted to Mr. S. W.
