Die EU-Richtlinie MiFID ("Markets in Financial Instruments Directive") wird europaweit einheitliche Bedingungen für den Vertrieb von Finanzprodukten, wie z.B. Fondsanteilen, schaffen. Die tief greifenden Änderungen, die dadurch für Finanzdienstleister entstehen, werden in der Branche derzeit noch kaum umfassend wahrgenommen. Die Richtlinie soll vor allem den Anlegerschutz und die Transparenz verbessern, und verlangt ab Inkrafttreten (Ende November 2007), dass dem Kunden die jeweils günstigste bzw. schnellste Möglichkeit der Abwicklung angeboten wird ("Best Execution"). Die mit der MiFID verbundenen hohen Kosten zur Anpassung der IT-Systeme sowie die erhöhten Berichtsanforderungen werden von kleineren Anbietern kaum zu leisten sein. Durch ihr Ausscheiden aus dem Markt wird jedoch der Wettbewerbsdruck verringert, was nicht im Interesse der Kunden sein kann.
