素书

(This text is in Chinese NOT English) Attributed to Huang Shigong (黄石公, "Master Yellow Stone"; traditionally fl. ca. late third-early second century BCE), the Sushu (素书, "Plain Book") is a compact classical Chinese treatise on self-cultivation, judgment, leadership, statecraft, and the causes of success and failure.

This carefully edited volume presents the complete work in six chapters and 126 passages, together with two traditional commentarial traditions arranged directly beneath the passages they interpret. Modern punctuation has been supplied throughout, making the terse classical text more accessible for reading, recitation, reference, and close study.

A defining feature of this edition is its use of "extended" simplified Chinese. Standard simplified characters are employed wherever they preserve the distinctions and meaning of the source text. Traditional forms are retained, however, whenever ordinary simplification would merge distinct characters, obscure the intended sense, or diminish the text's philological precision. Rare, archaic, and unusual characters are likewise preserved rather than silently replaced or normalized.

The result is an edition that remains accessible to readers accustomed to simplified Chinese while preserving important graphic and semantic distinctions found in the received text. Clearly arranged and textually conservative, this volume offers a practical and reliable presentation of one of the Chinese tradition's most concentrated manuals of ethical conduct, political judgment, and strategic wisdom.
