A Bend in the River

One young man's journey from Confederate gray to Union blue will carry him farther from home than he ever imagined.

Johns River, North Carolina, 1861. Seventeen-year-old Joe Hartley has never known a world beyond the mountain bend where the water slips out of sight. He works rented land alongside free Black farming families who have long treated the Hartleys as their own, and he loves Hannah Bass, the fierce young woman who believes a larger world is waiting beyond their isolated community.

When circumstances at home grow desperate, Joe comes to believe Confederate wages are his family's only hope. He enlists for a cause he does not believe in and promises Hannah he will return. Instead, the war carries him from the battlefields of Virginia and Pennsylvania to the disease and deprivation of Point Lookout prison camp in Maryland, where he must choose between remaining a prisoner and swearing allegiance to the Union.

His decision leads him into the ranks of the First United States Volunteer Infantry, among the former Confederate prisoners known as the Galvanized Yankees, and onward to Fort Rice on the Dakota frontier. There, his encounters with Lakota people force him to confront another struggle over land, freedom, and survival. Back in Johns River, Hannah faces a future neither of them imagined as their fragile community is strained by war, racism, and loss. As each builds a life from what remains, the future they once envisioned slips farther beyond the bend.

Spanning 1861 to 1914, A Bend in the River is a deeply human novel about conscience and survival, divided loyalties, unexpected families, and the changing meaning of home.
