A Smart Guide to Global Research Impact

A Smart Guide to Global Research Impact is a practical guide for researchers, principal investigators, and university leaders seeking to plan, demonstrate, and enhance academic and societal impact throughout the research lifecycle. Drawing from international practices, the authors offer step-by-step actions that translate research evaluation, scientometrics, and scholarly communication into practical strategies. This includes establishing impact pathways, aligning outputs with assessment frameworks (e.g., REF), and engaging with global ranking systems (e.g., QS, THE, ARWU, Leiden, and Scimago). The book clarifies concepts such as citation analysis, the impact factor, and the h-index, while also incorporating qualitative approaches, including the Theory of Change, KPIs, and ROI, to support responsible assessment and knowledge exchange. Structured as a hands-on manual, it includes tools, templates, and actionable plans covering 0- to 12-month horizons. It illustrates how to enhance discoverability, design outreach initiatives, evidence outcomes, and create robust impact case studies. Additionally, it connects research strategy to policy influence, innovation, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing the importance of open science and Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV).

Tailored for early-career scholars, mature researchers, deans, research managers, and funders, this concise volume strikes a balance between usability and rigor. It equips readers to improve visibility, collaboration, and institutional performance while keeping purpose, integrity, and societal benefit at the heart of research.
