Academic Assets traces how the CIA's MKULTRA program used American universities and a legitimate-seeming scientific society to fund behavioral research whose true sponsor and purpose most participating researchers - and virtually all research subjects - never knew.

At the center of this volume is the case of Dr. Ewen Cameron, a prominent psychiatrist whose CIA-funded research at Montreal's Allan Memorial Institute produced documented, legally adjudicated harm to psychiatric patients who believed they were receiving ordinary care. This book treats that history with the factual seriousness it demands, describing what is proven without sensationalizing it - and confronts directly what happened when the CIA's own director ordered the program's records destroyed in 1973, permanently limiting what anyone can now know.
