All My Colours

Summary

Six-year-old Amara has two grandmothers, two kitchens, and two whole worlds she gets to call home. On one side of the family, Ajee lights diyas at Divali, throws colour at Phagwah, and stirs Sunday curry into something magic. On the other, Vó bakes golden pastel de nata, hums fado while tracing blue tile patterns, and gathers everyone for Christmas Eve Consoada.

Amara loves it all; until a classmate asks her, "But what are you, really?" and for the first time, she doesn't have an answer. With her mum's help, she finds the words: she isn't half of one thing and half of another, like a pear cut down the middle. She's all of it, all at once.

Armed with her new confidence, Amara starts asking her friends the same warm, curious questions she wishes people would ask her; and learns about Kofi's jollof rice, Mei's Lunar New Year, Diego's marigolds, Yusuf's Eid lanterns, and Aroha's waiata. By the end, a circle of children stands together, each one different, each one proud, all of them connected.

All My Colours is a gentle read-aloud for ages 4-7 that helps mixed-heritage children along with children from all backgrounds overall to see themselves as whole rather than divided, while teaching every child a simple, repeatable habit: ask kindly, listen closely, and wear your own colours with pride.
