ALMENDRALEJO, AUGUST 1936

Almendralejo, August 1936 reconstructs nine extraordinary days in which a town in Extremadura became the setting for one of the most intense and singular episodes of the Spanish Civil War's advance through western Spain. Between 7 and 15 August 1936, military columns moving north from Seville entered Almendralejo on their route towards Mérida and Badajoz. The occupation of the town, however, did not bring the fighting to an immediate end. A group of Republican militiamen remained entrenched in the tower of the Church of La Purificación, transforming its bell tower into an isolated defensive position above a town already largely under the control of the attacking forces. From that moment, the church ceased to be merely a religious building. It became a fortress, a target, a refuge and, eventually, a trap. This book reconstructs the events day by day: the arrival of the columns on 7 August; the bombardment and street fighting; the killings committed during the collapse of Republican control; the arrests and violence that accompanied the occupation; the men who withdrew into the tower; the attempts to force them out with artillery, fire and smoke; and the progressive destruction of the church. At the centre of the narrative stands the extraordinary action of Lieutenant of Engineers Luis Ripoll López. On 11 August, accompanied by a legionnaire and under fire from the bell tower, Ripoll crossed the exposed ground, entered the damaged church despite being wounded, reached the base of the spiral staircase and placed an explosive charge that destroyed its lower section. His action would later be recognised with the Laureate Cross of Saint Ferdinand. Yet the destruction of the staircase did not immediately end the resistance. Isolated above the church, with diminishing ammunition, water and supplies, the defenders remained in the tower until 15 August. The book follows those final days without inventing conversations, motives or heroic legends. Where the documentary record is certain, it states what can be established. Where sources contradict one another, the disagreement remains visible. Where the evidence does not permit certainty-concerning numbers, individual identities, deaths or the precise circumstances of the final surrender-the narrative refuses to transform repetition into fact. The story also continues beyond the tower. Arrests, executions, military proceedings, repression and the suffering of families form part of what happened in Almendralejo and cannot be reduced to a political accounting in which one victim is used to cancel another. Drawing upon military documentation, historical studies, contemporary accounts, personal records and the surviving physical setting, Prof. Manuel Gago Fernández approaches these events with a deliberately rigorous principle: document before legend, evidence before propaganda, individual lives before anonymous statistics. Almendralejo, August 1936 is therefore more than the reconstruction of a siege. It is an investigation into what happens when civil war enters a town, divides its inhabitants and converts familiar streets and buildings into a battlefield. The Church of La Purificación still stands. Those who fired from above and those who fired from below have disappeared.
