This heartfelt collection of six stories follows curious young Robbie as he listens to his grandmother's memories of growing up in a rural community long ago. Through her stories, Robbie learns about life without electricity, a one-room schoolhouse, daily chores, and the excitement of Saturday Market Day and Christmas with simple gifts. Grandma also shares her experiences working in cotton fields as part of a sharecropping family. These stories were inspired by African Americans' oral accounts of life as children growing up in rural America during the 1930s to 1950s and are presented in the author's non-fiction book: Standing on Our Ancestors' Shoulders: Transformations of African American Life in Rural Georgia, 1930s to 1950s (2025). Blending imagination with history, these stories celebrate family, resilience, and the importance of preserving the voices and memories of the past.
