A knight, battered in a skirmish he lost, stumbles into a village and tells an elderly wizard he has an unwelcome new neighbor. An ogre has moved in nearby. Worrisome news for Balin, the wizard.
Balin regards the village near his home as his responsibility. How will he protect it?
He won't have to do it alone. Two elves and their cat join him in spying on the ogre. They find he has settled in beside a most unusual beanstalk. Far bigger than any tree, it reaches high into the sky.
Balin is captured during an early scouting expedition and is compelled to watch as the ogre prepares to make him the main course for lunch. Although he escapes, it's just the first of their confrontations.
In another, Felix the cat climbs after the ogre up the beanstalk. When the ogre picks and eats a magic bean, everything takes a very strange turn.
A second magic bean, a golden egg, gigantic goose and newborn gnome create additional challenges for Balin and his friends.
