Before the Subject: Recognition, Affect, and the Economy of the Event challenges the way we think about recognition, value, and credit in contemporary financialized capitalism. Drawing on recognition theory (Honneth, Butler, Fraser, McNay) and affect theory (Spinoza, Deleuze, Massumi), Giovanni Beviláqua argues that today's algorithmic credit systems modulate, anticipate, and capture affective potentials before they stabilize into anything the grammar of recognition can name.

The book moves across three movements-ontological, organizational, and institutional. It builds the concept of Affective-Processual Recognition, redefining recognition as the opening or blockage of affective qualification events rather than the identification of an already-constituted subject. Through Brazilian case studies-a neighborhood bakery's informal credit ledger, a digital confectionery business, a street-market produce stand-it reveals the relational value that conventional credit scoring structurally cannot see.

The final chapters propose Recognition-Based Financing: three design principles for credit systems that recognize relational and territorial value without reducing living relationships to static metrics. A manifesto for an "economy of the event," the book asks a different question of justice: not who is recognized as what, but what life-potential is being opened or blocked.

Bridging critical management studies, political economy, and philosophy, this is essential reading for scholars, credit evaluators, policymakers, and anyone concerned with how finance sees-and fails to see-the value that escapes.
