A Classic Work of Collation and Annotation of Traditional Chinese Medicine Ancient Texts Returned from Overseas

海外回归中医古籍校释经典之作

Sequel to the Discussion on the Easy and Simple Formulas, with Appendix: The Easy and Simple Formulas, and Appendix: Collected Later Edition of the Sequel to the Discussion on the Easy and Simple Formulas - a total of three works.

The Sequel to the Discussion on the Easy and Simple Formulas (Xu Yi Jian Fang Lun) was compiled by Shi Fa of the Southern Song Dynasty and completed in the third year of the Chunyou era (1243). This work was recorded in Ming dynasty bibliographies, but by the Qing dynasty, it had become extremely rare. To date, only Japan still preserves later manuscript or printed editions of this book outside of China. The present punctuated and collated edition is based on a manuscript from the third year of the Tenmei era (1783) in Japan, which bears a handwritten postscript by Tada Motoyasu (Multi-Genjian). It has been collated using the Three Causes and One Principle Pattern-Related Formulaic Discussions (Sanyin Jiyi Bingzheng Fang Lun) as well as other Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasty medical formularies as reference texts. This work consists of six volumes without formal categorization. It directly lists the forty formulas discussed in the Easy and Simple Formulas (Yi Jian Fang) - namely, the "Thirty Methods for Modified Decoctions" and the "Ten Methods for Market-Made Pill Formulas" - and provides detailed differential diagnosis and medication analysis for each formula, assessing the appropriateness and shortcomings of each formula's indications and applications. Additionally, it appends 168 notable alternative formulas, with clear explanations of their indications.

The Easy and Simple Formulas (Yi Jian Fang) was compiled by Wang Shuo of the Southern Song Dynasty. The present annotated edition is based on the re-engraved Song dynasty Yang family edition of Siming, reprinted by Bo Saburo (Bō San'ei / Wang San-ying) during the first year of the Kan'en era (1748) in Japan (referred to as the "Kan'en edition"), with the Japanese Tampō fourth year (1833) engraved edition, bearing handwritten marginal annotations and corrections by four Japanese Kampo physicians including Inoue Teimei (referred to as the "Tampō edition"), as a secondary collation text. This work has no volume divisions. Although it discusses thirty commonly used medicinal substances at the beginning, its main body consists of forty formulas - namely, the "Thirty Methods for Modified Decoctions" and the "Ten Methods for Market-Made Pill Formulas." Most of the formulas recorded can be prepared as powders or pills, facilitating storage and dissemination. The text also includes detailed methods for the processing of Chinese medicinals, the preparation of ready-to-use formulas, and their preservation, along with instructions for modified use in various clinical scenarios.

The Collected Later Edition of the Sequel to the Discussion on the Easy and Simple Formulas (Xu Yi Jian Fang Lun Hou Ji) was compiled by Lu Zuchang of the Southern Song Dynasty. Its original title is believed to have been Correction of Errors in the Easy and Simple Formulas (Yi Jian Fang Jiu Miu). The present annotated edition is based on a manuscript from the Edo period preserved in the Cabinet Library of the National Archives of Japan, which was repatriated from Japan. It has been collated using the Three Causes and One Principle Pattern-Related Formulaic Discussions (Sanyin Jiyi Bingzheng Fang Lun), the One Hundred and One Selected Formulas (Bai Yi Xuan Fang), the Easy and Simple Formulas (Yi Jian Fang), as well as other Yuan and Ming dynasty medical formularies as reference texts.

《续易简方论》,附《易简方》《续易简方论后集》,凡三部书。

《续易简方论》由南宋施发所撰,成书于南宋淳祐三年(1243)。该书见于明代书目著录,至清代该书已流传甚少。至今
