Cutaneous sensory experiences such as itch, dysesthesia, pain, and their complex variants are among the most frequent yet least fully understood symptoms encountered in clinical practice. Despite their prevalence and clinical impact, cutaneous sensory syndromes have historically been under-recognized, variably defined, and inconsistently managed.
This book is conceived to address that gap by providing a comprehensive, clinically grounded, and academically rigorous exploration of itch, dysesthesia and cutaneous sensory syndromes. The book brings together current knowledge on epidemiology, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, immunologic mechanisms, and psychosomatic dimensions, with a strong focus on clinical application. Emphasis is placed on differential diagnosis, structured clinical evaluation, and rational therapeutic strategies, including both established and emerging treatments. This book does not claim to offer definitive answers to all aspects of itch and dysesthesia; rather, it seeks to provide a foundation upon which future research and clinical innovation can be built. The goal of this book is to elevate the recognition of cutaneous sensory syndromes as legitimate, complex medical conditions deserving of rigorous study.
Cutaneous Sensory Syndromes, Itch, and Dysesthesia is intended for dermatologists, neurologists, pain specialists, psychiatrists, primary care physicians, researchers, and trainees who encounter patients with chronic itch or dysesthesia in their practice.
