England No More is set in a future England under the yoke of a brutal tyrannical regime - The Righteous Party - which seized power after an insurrection and a bloody three-year civil war. Now two great worldwide military and political forces confront each other - The Righteous League and the Western Democratic Alliance.
The story, set mostly in 2084, follows events in the life of Len Deakin, a captain in the Resistance based in the West of England. Len is captured and pressured into an undertaking to assassinate persons unknown to him. When he discovers they are the last members of the deposed English royal family he is unable to carry out the "mission" and is obliged to go on the run. He rescues his partisan wife, Rosalie, from a public hanging and the two end up on Dartmoor, where they hide out with Wu Chung, an army doctor who has deserted from the Army of the Righteous. But Len is taken by a patrol and imprisoned in Newmetro (formerly London).
He undergoes a battle of wits with an interrogator, Eugene Melchior, who is intent on making Len convert to the Righteous Party on the scaffold before his public execution. Len's resistance is finally broken when Melchior demolishes his deluded ideas of an idyllic England of the past. The central theme of the novel is Len's personal struggle to come to terms with a new reality in which the England he knew and loved has vanished forever.
Managing to escape execution, Len catches sight of Rosalie in 2090 by chance in Newmetro with her son Lenny. The couple eventually get together and tell their stories. There is the hope that they will reunite as husband and wife and start again.
