Behind polished glass, soft voices, and spotless white rooms, the wealthy come to purchase Affinity treatments: biological doses of comfort, devotion, attachment, and peace. The clinic insists the process is safe. Ethical. Harmless. Donors are paid. Clients are healed. Everyone leaves with what they came for.

Cal knows better.

He works below the public floors, in the warm basement where the real production happens. There, ruined former donors rest in cradles, transformed by repeated extraction into swollen, living sources of the substance sold upstairs as love. They are not exactly prisoners. That is the worst part.

When a frightened woman tries to back out of donation and stumbles into the lower levels, Cal is forced to show her what the House of Plenty really keeps beneath its clean surface. But Cal is not a rescuer. He is not innocent. He tends the cradles, comforts the things inside them, and understands too well why someone might choose emptiness over pain.
