This book explores the strength and load carrying capacity of gears, providing the theoretical foundation for a better understanding of the calculation relationships formulated in the current ISO standards. The main focus is on the surface, subsurface and core three-dimensional stress states that are generated under load, on the multiaxial fatigue criteria, and on the multiaxial strength criteria, without which it would be virtually impossible to understand the complex mechanisms that determine fatigue damage and breakages in gear teeth. In turn, the book addresses the main calculation methods that employ these theoretical tools, incorporating available experimental evidence to do so. Lastly, it describes the procedures used to calculate the load carrying capacity of gears in accordance with the ISO standards, and highlights how the formulae for standardized calculations are based on the previously discussed theoretical and experimental foundations.
