DEDICATION

For the drivers-

the ones who know every pothole by name,

who wait for the woman with the stroller even when they're running late,

who carry a city on their shoulders every morning

and bring it home every night.

This route is for you.

PREVIOUSLY IN GRAVEYARD SHIFT ACADEMY

Five children of night-shift workers discovered the Graveyard Shift Academy underground. In Book Two, Miles became the Engine Room's keeper after fighting deferred maintenance at the port. In Book Three, Esperanza became the Healing Ward's keeper after launching the Night Watch Clinic for underserved night-shift communities. New students Leo (welder's son) and Nia (paramedic's daughter) joined the Academy. The crew continues to teach, learn, and carry the knowledge forward.

This is Kwame's story.

PROLOGUE

The Compass Remembers

I was crafted in 1939, in a watchmaker's shop on Telegraph Avenue in Oakland, by a woman named Lena Yamashiro who built navigational instruments for fishing boats and merchant vessels and, once, secretly, for a crew of longshoremen who needed to find their way through the fog to a picket line on the far side of the estuary.

I am not an ordinary compass. An ordinary compass points north. I point toward need. Toward the nearest place where someone is waiting for something they cannot reach-a bus that doesn't come, a route that was cancelled, a connection that was severed by a budget cut or a policy decision or the simple, devastating fact that someone in an office decided that this neighborhood didn't generate enough revenue to justify a bus stop.

I have been held by six navigators. Lena gave me to Patricia Odoms-Academy founder, bus driver, cartographer of the invisible city. Patricia mapped every route in Oakland not by where the buses went, but by where they didn't go. She understood that a transit map is a moral document. Every route it includes is a promise. Every route it excludes is a betrayal.

And now I belong to Kwame Price. Eleven years old. The youngest navigator the Academy has ever produced. A boy who draws maps the way some people write prayers-with the desperate, stubborn belief that if you can show people where the gaps are, they might choose to fill them.

My needle does not point north. It points toward the people who have been left behind.

Follow it. They are waiting.
