Heinrich Marschner (1795-1861), one of the most popular German opera composers of his time, was a great admirer of the poetry of Robert Burns (1759-1796). He set a number of his poems to music, using German translations by Ferdinand Freiligrath (1810-1876) and Wilhelm Gerhard (1780-1858).§Another Scot who aroused Marschner s interest was William Motherwell (1797-1835).
