It's the Man, Not You Roadblocks, Book One

There is a story America tells about who is responsible for what, and for a long time that story has left out half the truth. This book fills in the other half.

Before slavery ended, it was already being redesigned. It became convict leasing, then Jim Crow, then redlining, then a hundred smaller policies written in language too dry to sound like what they were. Each version took a different shape and wore a different name, but underneath, the function stayed the same: keep the door closing quietly enough that no one outside the room could see who was holding it shut. It's the Man, Not You walks that timeline honestly, from the plantation to the present, through the laws, the codes, and the quiet math of who gets access and who does not.

This book does not treat history as background noise. It treats it as evidence, laid out in order, so the reader can see how one policy set up the next, and how the language changed even when the outcome did not. Slavery became sharecropping. Sharecropping became convict leasing, a system that filled prisons with newly freed Black men over minor or invented offenses, then leased their labor back to the same plantations and industries that had lost it. Jim Crow followed, written into law, enforced by violence when the law was not enough. Then came redlining, the GI Bill that quietly excluded Black veterans from the wealth it built for others, urban renewal that displaced entire neighborhoods in the name of progress, and a war on drugs that criminalized survival in communities already starved of opportunity. Each chapter of this book takes one thread of that history and follows it forward, showing exactly where it lands in the present: in housing, in sentencing, in lending, in who gets hired and who gets watched.

This is not a book about excuses. It is a book about evidence. It names the systems that were built to stand in the way of Black and Hispanic communities in particular, and it does so with the receipts: the legislation, the court cases, the housing policy, the patterns that repeat themselves generation after generation whether or not anyone is paying attention to repeat them. If you have ever felt the weight of something you could not name, something that shaped your family's options before you were even born, this book gives that weight its history and its paper trail.

It is also, in its own way, a book of respect. Respect for how much has been survived, and how much has been overcome without the credit or the acknowledgment that survival deserves. Understanding the roadblock is not the same as being defeated by it. Naming a system honestly, without flinching and without exaggeration, is its own form of clarity, and clarity is where real change starts, both in policy and in how a person understands their own life inside that policy.

It's the Man, Not You is Book One of the Roadblocks series. It does not ask you to stay here, in the case against the system, and it does not let the system become the whole story either. It asks you to see the structure clearly first, so that when Book Two turns the question back toward you, toward what is yours to reclaim and what was never your fault to begin with, you are standing on solid ground instead of guessing at what was never fair to begin with.

Some roadblocks were built. Some were inherited. All of them are real, and all of them have a history that can be traced, documented, and understood. This book tells you which is which, and it does the work of showing you exactly how they were built, brick by brick, law by law, so that no one can tell you the weight you have carried was only in your head.
