Some wars are fought on the front lines. Others are fought in between the lines.

For Diana, the words Missing in Action are both devastating blow and the only hope she has left. Her husband, Joe, is somewhere in the Pacific, and no one can tell her what happened to him --- or where he might be, But Joe left Diana something no one else knew about: a secret cipher hidden within their letters. Now Diana must reveal their secret to her brothers, Otis and Chester, and together they begin piecing together the clues Joe left behind. Their only chance of finding him may be hidden between the lines they have written.

Chester fights across the European front with his platoon, caught between the brutal reality of keeping his men alive and the promise he made to his sister. As Diana sends him coded messages about Joe, Chester must decipher every word, searching for clues that might lead them to Joe while fighting a war of his own. With the war raging on, Otis must use everything his siblings have learned about Joe to cross the Atlantic and make his way toward the Pacific. U-boats lurk beneath the waves, violent weather threatens the journey, and the treacherous ocean stands between him and the man he has promised to find.

Thousands of miles apart, Diana, Chester, and Otis follow the trail Joe left behind --- one letter, one code, and one uncertain clue at a time.
