He inherited a shop in a neighbourhood that had every reason not to trust his name.

When sixty-year-old David McCready inherits his uncle's corner shop on Belfast's Springfield Road, he intends to clear the shelves, sell the building and return to the life he understands.

The instructions left behind are simple:

Keep her open until September. After that, do what you think is decent.

For David, the McCready name represents family, loyalty and a culture he has never believed he should apologise for. To many of the shop's customers, however, that same name belongs to the other side of a divided road.

As David reluctantly keeps the doors open, he begins to know the people his community taught him to view from a distance: Máire Donnelly, who remembers more about his uncle than she is willing to say; Eoin, her sharp-witted teenage grandson; and the regular customers who care less about political speeches than bread, milk and whether the shop will still be there tomorrow.

But the past has been waiting behind the counter.

A hidden ledger, a locked back room and an old act of cowardice force David to confront what his uncle did during the Troubles-and what silence allowed him to become. Meanwhile, people on both sides begin claiming the shop as a symbol of their own history.

David must decide whether loyalty means defending the story he inherited or finding the courage to examine it honestly.

Set in contemporary Belfast, No Surrender is a powerful and deeply human novel about identity, guilt, belonging and the stories communities tell in order to survive.

It is not a story about choosing one side.

It is a story about refusing to believe that understanding another person requires surrendering who you are.
