One Bifröst Incident

He saw an unnecessary rune. He removed it. This was, in retrospect, a mistake.

Rune apprentice Arvid Bodvarsson has been told repeatedly not to improve things he doesn't fully understand.

Unfortunately, Arvid is very good at understanding things.

At least, that's what he thinks until one small correction to an ancient Bifröst routing stone starts sending freight to the wrong realms, exposing a road that officially doesn't exist, and attracting the attention of people whose job descriptions include phrases like preventing inter-realm infrastructure failures.

Fixing it will require help from a relentlessly precise dwarf, a skald discovering that beautiful stories can be dangerously inaccurate, and Yrsa-Arvid's lifelong friend, whose priorities remain practical, observant, and heavily influenced by cloudberries.

The problem isn't simply figuring out what the old magic does.

It's figuring out why generations of competent people left it alone.

One Bifröst Incident is a dryly funny fantasy about magical infrastructure, forgotten rules, institutional memory, competent people, questionable improvements, and the uncomfortable possibility that the strange thing everyone wants to remove may be there for a reason.
