What would happen if, unlike other religious institutes, the vocation to Opus Dei of total self-giving were not, in reality, a vocation of surrender to God but rather a form of total indebtedness to Opus Dei itself? The debt contracted due to the vocation would become the cornerstone legitimizing superiors to demand the full salary of numeraries and associates-as well as all kinds of goods, such as unpaid labor and the obligation to make a will-without the need to rely on the Statutes (a juridical dissociation). This debt would not be properly economic or canonical but above all moral, though it would drag along everything else, resulting in a total indebtedness of the person (a personal holocaust, in Escriva's words). And perhaps it would be the cause of the ruin in the lives of so many individuals who denounce Opus Dei.
