Excerpt from Pompilia and Her Poet There is a story of Robert Browning which I have always liked. It seems that once when he was attending an after noon reception an eager young lady approached him and gushed: Oh, Mr. Browning, I am happy to have met you at last! For now you can explain to me a certain passage in Pippa Passes. And she proceeded to quote the lines which had confused her. Whereupon the great poet leaned down, patted her on the head and said: My dear young lady, don't ask me - ask the Browning Society. Geniuses, after all, are human beings. And it is as a human being that Miss Gaylord approaches one of the greatest poets of all time; and so, too, she approaches Mrs. Browning.
