Reflecting on India's Development

The book assesses the development experience by reflecting on a number of aspects. It covers growth issues in relation to employment, regional imbalances and rural-urban distribution. The educational attainment and human capital formation issues are examined keeping in view the skill shortage that the country is facing. The social inequality including gender is analysed and some of the empowerment strategies are evaluated. The effectiveness of health services is critically assessed keeping in view some of the on-going programmes related to sanitation, family planning and reproductive health. The papers follow both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Rare data bases which are usually not available in the public domain are utilised to reflect on the development experience of the country. Through case studies some of the on-going programmes are examined critically in order to determine their effectiveness in the future. The book revisits many development concerns, particularly the inclusiveness aspect, through an in-depth analysis. It covers three major areas related to (a) employment, (b) education and skill and (c) social concerns and issues related to health services. Some of the specific programmes are evaluated intensely through case studies.
