This book explores the rise of RISC-V and, more importantly, how China is turning an open processor architecture into a strategic semiconductor ecosystem capable of challenging the established x86 and ARM order.

For decades, computing was dominated by two architectures. x86, led by Intel and AMD, became the foundation of PCs and data centers, while ARM established itself across mobile, embedded, and increasingly high-performance computing. Both benefited from powerful ecosystems, but their proprietary intellectual-property models created significant barriers for new entrants.

RISC-V emerged in 2010 from a Berkeley research project led by Professor Krste Asanović. Its fundamental innovation was not simply performance, but openness and modularity.

A small, stable instruction-set foundation can be extended for different applications, allowing designers to build everything from simple microcontrollers to sophisticated CPUs and AI-enabled processors. This creates the possibility of a common architectural platform across the computing spectrum.

The book's central focus is what happened when this open architecture encountered China's strategic need for technological independence. The distinction between an open RISC-V standard and genuinely open-source processor implementations becomes crucial.

Chinese institutions and companies have increasingly combined the two, creating an ecosystem in which research, hardware design, education, government support, and commercial production reinforce one another.

At the heart of this ecosystem are organizations and initiatives such as BOSC, OSOC, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Alibaba's T-Head. Together, they illustrate a model in which government funding, academic research, open-source development, and industrial commercialization can create a self-sustaining alternative to traditional semiconductor IP licensing.

The book follows several milestones in this development. Kunminghu V3 demonstrates the potential of an academia-led, open-source approach to produce silicon-proven processors. T-Head's XuanTie family, including C906, OpenC910, C920, C908, and C950, shows how Alibaba has progressively expanded from individual open processor cores toward a broader RISC-V hardware ecosystem.

The story then moves from processor design to commercial deployment. SpacemiT's K3 SoC, combining RISC-V CPU cores with a 60-TOPS AI accelerator, demonstrates how open processors can become complete commercial computing platforms for edge AI, robotics, and intelligent devices. The forthcoming K5 represents the next step, targeting more demanding applications including AI infrastructure, cloud computing, high-performance computing, and embodied robotics.

The book therefore presents the Chinese RISC-V ecosystem as more than a collection of open-source projects. It represents a new model of semiconductor development, linking state strategy, universities, research institutes, open-source communities, and commercial companies.

The central question is whether this model can scale from academic experimentation and efficient edge processors to world-class, commercially competitive computing platforms.

If it succeeds, RISC-V could become not merely an alternative instruction set, but the foundation of a Chinese-led ecosystem capable of reducing dependence on Western technology and reshaping the global semiconductor landscape.
