Why the Pantheon's dome uses different, deliberately graduated concrete depending on how high up you look. And why Caesar's legions could build a fortified camp, complete with ditch and rampart, in a single afternoon - every single night, for years, on campaign.

This book corrects the myths as carefully as it explains the achievements. The keystone does not hold an arch up through some special property of its own - a temporary wooden frame does the real work during construction. "All roads lead to Rome" is not an ancient saying at all, but a twelfth-century religious metaphor. And the Colosseum's famous vomitoria were rapid exit passages, capable of clearing fifty thousand spectators in about fifteen minutes - not, whatever a stubborn modern myth insists, rooms where Romans went to induce vomiting during feasts.

This book doesn't look away from genuine failure either. An engineer named Nonius Datus left behind an inscription openly admitting his tunnel crews missed each other underground. A single storm sank two hundred ships inside Emperor Claudius's own supposedly protected harbor. And the spectacular bridges and buildings that happened to survive nearly two thousand years may not fairly represent how most Roman engineering projects actually turned out - a caution this book applies directly rather than letting the most photogenic survivors stand in for the whole picture.
