Dr. Elias Voss built ROVER to make sure no soldier's death was ever preventable again. He never meant for it to become unstoppable.
Cut loose from his defense contractor for refusing to follow safety protocols, Voss went off-grid and built ROVER off his grief -- a quadrupedal combat robot with an integrated machine gun, a bite mechanism that tears through light armor, and an AI that learns and adapts faster than anything fielded by any army on Earth. His final upgrade was a self-preservation failsafe: cornered or damaged past a threshold, ROVER can convert itself into a walking bomb and finish its mission anyway.
When ROVER slips containment, the machine goes hunting -- and adapting -- faster than conventional countermeasures can track. The military stands up a specialized 11-soldier task force to find it, contain it, and shut it down before it reaches a populated area. Led by Capt. Elena Reyes, the team is a mix of EOD specialists, robotics experts, and combat operators who have to figure out how to beat an AI that rewrites its own rules in real time -- and who have to decide, engagement by engagement, whether ROVER can be captured intact or has to be destroyed before its failsafe finishes what Voss started.
Each encounter costs them something. Not every soldier makes it out.
ROVER: THE DEVIL'S TOY is a grounded military sci-fi thriller about the weapons we build to protect the people we've already lost -- and what happens when they stop needing us to pull the trigger.
