A history of India's oldest Buddhist site. On a low sandstone hill in central India stands the Great Stupa of Sanchi, begun under the emperor Ashoka in the third century BCE and added to for thirteen hundred years. The Buddha never visited the place, yet it became one of the great sanctuaries of his faith. This short monograph explains why. It sets out how the Great Stupa was built and enlarged, who paid for it, and what the carvings on its four famous gateways show: the life of the Buddha, the stories of his earlier births, and the everyday world of ancient India, all told without once depicting the Buddha in human form. It also follows the later story of the hill: its long abandonment, its rediscovery in 1818, the damage done by early diggers, the restoration under Sir John Marshall, and the return in 1952 of the relics of the Buddha's two chief disciples. Written for the general reader, the visitor and the student, the monograph includes two diagrams, a chronology, a glossary and a guide to further reading.
