In the former Soviet Union, classical Orthodox Judaism generally played only a minor role; persecuted by the state and alienated from religion by decades of secularisation, the vast majority of Jews of Soviet origin are non-religious or only remotely open to religious matters. The Jewish immigrants from the former Soviet Union who came to Germany were no exception in this respect. Against this backdrop, it is all the more astonishing that immigrant teenagers and young adults are turning back to religion in Germany. What is particularly surprising is that this turn often leads to classical Orthodox Judaism. In my study of this phenomenon, I therefore focus on researching adolescent and young adult Jews and examine the possible reasons and motives behind this behaviour. It turns out that, in many cases, socio-psychological causes offer a better explanation than faith-related aspects.
