Three words spoken over a cup of untouched coffee refuse to leave Rena Sobeck alone.

For eleven years, Rena has managed the overnight shift at Milepost 44, a roadside diner along an Ohio freight corridor where truckers, locals, and drifters pass through the darkness. As she quietly follows Danny's final days, small inconsistencies begin connecting people who should have nothing to do with one another-county contractors, freight records, development deals, missing paperwork, and late-night vehicle movements hidden beneath the routines of everyday life. What begins as a search for answers becomes a dangerous investigation into a system that depends on nobody looking too closely.
