Des Moines, Iowa. 1982.
At four years old, Peanut already knows how to read a room better than most adults. He knows the difference between the mother who fills the kitchen with music, biscuits, cigarette smoke, and impossible promises, and the mother who disappears behind a bedroom door for days. He knows that food should be eaten when it appears. He knows that adults do not always come back.
Then his mother disappears for good.
With only his older sister Sissy, a battered He-Man sleeping bag, and whatever they can carry, Peanut enters another Des Moines, one hidden beneath interstate bridges, behind restaurants, inside laundromats, libraries, rail yards, abandoned buildings, and the blind spots of respectable society.
There they find the Street Rats.
The children have their own laws, their own maps, their own economy, and their own strange kind of family. They teach Peanut which dumpsters are safe, where steam grates stay warm, which adults see you without taking something from you, and how children can turn garbage, chalk, stories, and scraps of paper into a childhood when nobody bothers to provide one.
But survival leaves its own education.
As Peanut grows from a frightened little boy into Sissy's self-appointed shield, every winter, foster placement, group home, disappearance, and betrayal strengthens his belief that staying alive means becoming harder, quieter, more useful, and willing to absorb whatever comes for the people he loves.
Until survival itself begins to change.
Spanning 1982 to 1987 and inspired by the author's own childhood experiences, Street Rats is a raw, compassionate literary novel about homelessness, sibling loyalty, childhood trauma, institutional failure, imagination, found family, and the strange things children learn when the adults around them stop being dependable.
It is not a story about making poverty beautiful.
It is a story about the children who remained human inside it.
