The fire took half of Alan Nash's land in a single morning. The bank will take the rest by winter.
Then a stranger comes up the road out of nowhere - polite, smiling, asking only for a night's shelter and a day's work. His name is Louie Howard, and by the time he moves on, the Nash farm has begun to turn. The crops come back. The debts go quiet. All it cost was a handful of gold, dug out of the Dark Woods on the far reaches of the farm, where the old Iwaki said the ground was tainted and the dead were bound to the land they had sinned upon.
But nothing on that farm is free. Not the harvest, not the luck, and not the thing waiting beneath it - patient, ancient, and owed a debt it means to collect through Alan, through his wife and children, through every soul still standing on that soil.
The ground remembers what it swallowed.
