George Bernard Shaw turns politics into a brilliant battle of wits in The Apple Cart, a provocative comedy about monarchy, democracy, corporate power, and the question of who truly governs.

In a future Britain, King Magnus finds himself confronted by Prime Minister Proteus and a cabinet determined to reduce the monarchy to little more than a ceremonial institution. Magnus, however, has no intention of surrendering his political influence quietly. When the conflict reaches an impasse, he threatens an extraordinary response: he may abdicate, enter democratic politics himself, and appeal directly to the electorate.

Behind the struggle between king and cabinet lies an even larger force. Breakages, Limited, a powerful industrial corporation, exerts enormous influence over public life and government policy. Through this fictional monopoly, Shaw examines the uneasy relationship between political authority and economic power, asking whether elected governments can truly act independently when private interests possess the resources to shape national decisions.

Written in 1928 and first performed in 1929, The Apple Cart is a witty and intellectually charged political satire. Shaw uses sharp dialogue, comic confrontation, and deliberately provocative arguments to examine monarchy, democracy, capitalism, bureaucracy, political ambition, and the influence of public opinion.

At once entertaining and unsettlingly relevant, The Apple Cart challenges readers to consider where power actually resides-and whether democratic institutions are always as independent as they appear. With its lively characters, verbal sparring, and characteristic Shavian irreverence, the play remains a compelling exploration of government, wealth, and political authority.
