When Detective Inspector Deborah Crook and her husband leave London for a quieter life in the Lincolnshire village of Digby, they expect peace and tranquillity. They get neither. Hours after their arrival, sixty-five-year-old Marnie Thompson is found dead.
Marnie had lived in Digby all her life, and she knew everybody's business. She had enemies in abundance; a wealthy landowner desperate to build on the village outskirts, a bitter bowls club chairman, rival pigeon fanciers, old friends with old grudges and villagers whose secrets she had collected for decades.
As Deborah begins to investigate, Digby's polite rural façade starts to crack. Behind the village gossip, parish council arguments and Sunday quiz nights lies a tangled web of jealousy, resentment, money and long-buried secrets.
And then there is the notebook.
Meanwhile, Martin, Deborah's husband, becomes fascinated by another mystery: the disappearance of a local boy, Harry Wills, who vanished from Digby sixty years earlier. Harry's body was never found, and the case has long since become part of village folklore. But Martin begins to suspect that Harry never left Digby at all.
