The Eighteen Nineties

"The Eighteen Nineties" is a comprehensive and influential study of the cultural, literary, and artistic movements that defined the final decade of the nineteenth century in Britain. This seminal work offers a vivid panorama of the "Fin de Siècle," an era characterized by a unique blend of decadence, aestheticism, and burgeoning social change. The book explores the intellectual and creative climate of a period caught between the rigid traditions of the Victorian era and the emerging spirit of the modern world.

Holbrook Jackson masterfully chronicles the rise of the Decadent movement and the cult of "art for art's sake," providing insightful analysis of key figures such as Oscar Wilde, Aubrey Beardsley, and the contributors to "The Yellow Book." Beyond the aesthetic, the work examines the broader literary landscape, including the realism of George Bernard Shaw, the scientific romances of H.G. Wells, and the imperialist narratives of Rudyard Kipling. Through its detailed examination of art, literature, and social thought, "The Eighteen Nineties" captures the vibrant energy and contradictions of a decade that reshaped British culture. It remains an essential resource for understanding the transition into modernism and the enduring legacy of the nineteenth century's closing years.
