In 1910, a widow signed a check that would help write the darkest legal precedent in American history.

She did not know that. Neither did the biologist who cashed it, the banker who later matched it, or the trustees of some of the most respected charitable institutions in the country who kept the money flowing for the next three decades. They believed they were funding progress. What they were actually funding was a scientific movement that would sterilize more than sixty thousand Americans without consent, hand Nazi Germany a legal blueprint for its own sterilization law, and stand behind a Supreme Court justice as he wrote six words that still have not been erased from the law: three generations of imbeciles are enough.

This is not a book about a fringe conspiracy. It is a book about the ledgers.

The Eugenics Funding Map follows the actual money, dollar by dollar, grant by grant, from a Long Island farm bought with railroad money, through the marble halls of the Carnegie Institution, across the Atlantic to a Munich psychiatric institute that Rockefeller Foundation checks built brick by brick, into a Pasadena foundation funded by citrus fortunes that once bragged, in writing, about having jolted Adolf Hitler's government into action. It follows a Massachusetts textile heir who spent decades bankrolling the science of racial hierarchy long after the world claimed to have learned its lesson, and it follows the survivors, some of whom are still alive today, who spent their own lives trying to get a single state government to admit what had been done to their bodies without their consent.

Every name in this book is real. Every dollar figure comes from an institution's own archive. Every quotation is drawn from the historical record, not invented for effect, because the truth does not need embellishment. It needs an audience willing to follow the money all the way to where it landed.

You will meet Mary Harriman, whose fortune built the machine. Charles Davenport and Harry Laughlin, who ran it. The Rockefeller Foundation officers who kept funding a Nazi collaborator's research two years after Hitler took power, and the young researchers still working in his laboratory as war broke out. Carrie Buck, a seventeen year old Virginia girl sterilized on the authority of the highest court in the land, whose own daughter made the honor roll despite being cited as proof of hereditary feeblemindedness. Elaine Riddick, sterilized at fourteen while unconscious in a North Carolina hospital bed, who lived to tell a state legislature exactly what she thought she was worth.

This is narrative history written the way the best true crime is written: fast, exact, and impossible to put down once the first ledger opens. But nothing in it is fiction. The institutions are real. Some of them are still open for business today, their names still on university buildings, their money still shaping research that shapes public opinion. A few have finally taken their founders names down. Most have simply waited for the world to stop asking.

If you have ever wondered how an entire century's worth of respectable science, taught at Ivy League universities and funded by household name philanthropies, could stand behind an idea this dangerous, this book gives you the actual paper trail. Not the ideology. Not the theory. The money.

Read it, and you will never look at a charitable foundation's annual report the same way again.
