The False Door

There is a shop that opens at seven in the evening for whoever could not sleep. It sells antiquity, secrecy and power, and charges in something that does not appear on the label.

The False Door walks into that shop with a method that is simple and uncommon: open the books it sells and read them whole, with the dates beside them. Grimoires, black bibles, hermetic manuals, tarot, astrology, "manifesting," the vampire gospels. Each one is followed along its trail - which edition, which year, what the first page says, what page two hundred says - and set against what the cover promises. The charges are not asserted: they are proved with word-for-word quotations from the genre itself.

This is not a religious book or a catechism, and it argues from no authority. It is a demolition made out of documents, and behind it a proposal more demanding than any revelation: reason exercised all the way down, in the tradition of Epictetus, Seneca and Marcus Aurelius.

It is written by someone who went in at sixteen, stayed, and took a long time to get out. That is why the contempt is aimed at the merchandise and never at the person who bought it.
