Some days the hardest part is knowing what to call the trouble. The Human Reference begins with fifty sentences people actually say: at the kitchen table, in a parked car, on the porch after everyone else has gone to bed. I don't know where to begin. I miss someone today. I hurt someone. I do not feel God. I need help, but I hate asking. Find the sentence closest to what you are living, and it opens to a single page that follows the same path every time: Scripture to read, a short reflection, one small thing to try, words you can borrow, a question to come back to, and a prayer. There is nothing new to learn when your attention is already worn thin. The fifty entries are gathered in six parts: Begin: when the next step is hard to see Help: when care needs a practical shape Grief: when absence enters the ordinary day Repair: when truth asks something of us Return: when faith has become difficult Carrying Too Much: when the load needs to be shared There is room here for lament, for doubt, for anger with God, for church hurt, and for the strange guilt that can come with a good afternoon in a season of grief. The practices are invitations. Every one can be adapted, postponed, or left. When a need is bigger than a book, the page says so plainly and points toward a living person who can help. Keep it by your chair. Read one page or many. Use it alone, or hand a page to someone you trust and read it together. Come back when the day asks a different question. Includes a sentence index, a page of urgent support contacts, guidance for reading with someone, a page for writing your own sentence, and room for notes.
