In The Kingdom of Songhai: Empire of the Niger Bend, Elliot Rowan uncovers the story of one of Africa's greatest and most influential empires. Rising along the Niger River around the ancient city of Gao, Songhai expanded across the western Sahel to command Timbuktu, Jenne, and the great commercial routes of the Sahara, creating a vast empire sustained by agriculture, river traffic, long distance trade, and military power.

Drawing on Tarikh al-Sudan, Tarikh al-Fattash, archaeological discoveries, travel accounts, and surviving manuscript traditions, Rowan reconstructs the civilization that flourished along the Niger Bend. He follows the conquests of Sunni Ali, the rise of Askia Muhammad, the development of imperial government, and the extraordinary commercial and intellectual world of cities such as Gao and Timbuktu. From cavalry armies and river fleets to trans Saharan caravans carrying gold, salt, and books, the story reveals a society deeply connected to North Africa and the wider Islamic world.

Rowan also explores the scholars, merchants, farmers, fishermen, and craftsmen whose lives sustained the empire beyond its royal courts and battlefields. Particular attention is given to Timbuktu's celebrated tradition of scholarship and manuscript culture, as well as the political rivalries that gradually weakened imperial authority before the Moroccan invasion and the decisive Battle of Tondibi in 1591.

More than the story of a vanished African empire, this book reveals Songhai as an essential part of global history. Its cities became centers of commerce and learning, its rulers governed an immense and culturally diverse territory, and its influence survived the destruction of the empire itself. Centuries after Songhai disappeared from the political map, its legacy remains embedded in the cities, manuscripts, traditions, and landscapes of the Niger Bend.
