The Mango Seed

This book is a story. A single, continuous narrative, the life of one man, Arjun, told in the voice of a grandfather to his grandson. It is meant to be read from beginning to end, the way you would read a novel, or the way you would listen to someone who has lived enough to make every sentence count.

But it is also a synthesis of one hundred books. Every lesson Arjun learns, every decision he makes, every mentor who shapes him, every failure that instructs him, all of it is drawn from the ideas of the world's greatest writers on wealth, character, discipline, love, leadership, and meaning. The books are never named inside the story. They don't need to be. The ideas are alive in the narrative.

At the start of each chapter, you will find a note identifying which books are at work and how their principles are woven into what follows. At the end of each chapter, you will find a quote from one of those books, the idea at its most distilled, in the voice of the person who first articulated it clearly.

Read it once to live through Arjun's story. Read it again to find the books inside it. Read it a third time when you are facing something difficult, and let it remind you that every difficulty has a teacher inside it, if you are willing to stay long enough to find out what it is.
