Everyone knows the line. Great things have small beginnings. Mighty oaks from little acorns grow. Start where you are, use what you have, and the rest will follow. It is the most quoted piece of encouragement in the language, and it is attached to a two-thousand-year-old story about a seed.
The story does not say what people think it says.
Anna Kriger takes the most famous parable about smallness and asks a question that its admirers have somehow avoided for twenty centuries: is it actually true? The answer turns out to be considerably stranger, and considerably more useful, than the greeting-card version. Small beginnings do not reliably become large outcomes. Most of them come to nothing, and the same speaker said so, at greater length, a few sentences earlier.
