Everyone knows the line. Great things have small beginnings. Mighty oaks from little acorns grow. Start where you are, use what you have, and the rest will follow. It is the most quoted piece of encouragement in the language, and it is attached to a two-thousand-year-old story about a seed.
The story does not say what people think it says.
Anna Kriger takes the most famous parable about smallness and asks a question that its admirers have somehow avoided for twenty centuries: is it actually true? The answer turns out to be considerably stranger, and considerably more useful, than the greeting-card version. Small beginnings do not reliably become large outcomes. Most of them come to nothing, and the same speaker said so, at greater length, a few sentences earlier. What the parable identifies is not a promise but a mistake - the near-universal habit of measuring the wrong thing.
Drawing on the mathematics of thresholds, on epidemics and invasive weeds, on why some ideas take over the world while better ones vanish without trace, and on what the earliest readers of the story understood that we have forgotten, this book rebuilds a familiar image from the ground up. It explains why one seed in the right conditions beats a warehouse of seed in the wrong ones. Why a movement can be growing while nearly everyone inside it fails. Why the anxious question that keeps people awake - am I enough, is this enough - is not merely hard to answer but is the wrong shape of question altogether. And why the story ends, in every version we have, not with the size of the plant but with birds sheltering in it.
Witty, humane, and quietly subversive, this is a book about beginnings for anyone who has ever started something and wondered whether it was worth it. It offers no reassurance. It offers something better: a clear account of where to look.
The book is based on academic paper: Anna Kriger. 2026. The Smallest of Seeds: Criticality, Branching, and the Structure of Disproportionate Outcomes. IIIR Computational Humanities and Cultural Systems. https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.21515081
