The night the creature came through Mara Vance's bedroom wall, she didn't scream. She held still. That's how the bond happened - and how everything after happened, too.
Mara knows she should be grateful when Ashmoor Academy comes for her. Ashmoor saved her little brother. Ashmoor trains kids like her: kids with Passengers, creatures from the drowned world underneath ours, kids with powers the ordinary world never sees. And Mara's Passenger, Wick, has the least impressive power in her whole class. The teachers call it insufficient. If Mara can't prove the bond by the end of term, the academy will "fix" it.
But Wick is hiding what it can really do. Wick is begging her to hide it.
And the more Mara learns about what happens to the school's graduates - and what's down in the East Wing - the more she starts to wonder who the training is really for.
She came to Ashmoor to be saved. She's going to stay for a very different reason.
