The Templars: An Introductory Framework is part of the Work Papers series, a collection devoted to the critical analysis of power through its discursive, legal, religious, and military manifestations. In this volume, Agustín V. Startari approaches the Templar phenomenon not as a mere medieval episode, but as a specific form of symbolic organization in which language, violence, and legitimacy converge.

Drawing on a critical study of primary sources (the Rule, papal bulls, chronicles, and trial records) and on specialist historiography, the text analyses the configuration of the militia Christi as a hybrid institutional form: religious, military, patrimonial, and legally privileged. The aim is not to attribute a secret doctrine to the Temple, but to reconstruct the documentable mechanisms through which it acquired legitimacy, autonomy, and capacity for action within Latin Christendom.

The central thesis is that Templar power depended on an architecture of legitimation composed of religious discourse, papal privilege, patronage, military organization, and material resources; its suppression reveals the reverse process, as royal action, inquisitorial procedure, and papal jurisdiction recast the Order as a suspect body. Esoteric, neo-Templar, and conspiratorial traditions are examined separately as later reception, not as evidence for the medieval Order.

About the Work Papers series:

This collection brings together independent studies that explore the articulation of power, ideology, and legitimacy in different historical contexts, from Ancient Egypt to twentieth-century regimes. Each volume is self-contained, but all share a common thread: the technical study of how power is constructed, exercised, and reproduced through linguistic structures, institutions, and forms of representation.

Agustin V. Startari (Uruguay, 1982) is a linguist and historical researcher trained at the University of the Republic. His work combines philological analysis, institutional structure, and a critique of the languages of power. He has published studies on Ancient Egypt, National Socialism, colonial evangelization, and modern propaganda, including Creation of an Empire, Propaganda Machinery, Evangelization in the Writings of Fray Bartolomé, and Ukraine and Russia: A Conflict in Progress.

His cross-disciplinary approach and methodological rigor make Work Papers a solid reference point for the study of the discursive forms of command and legitimacy.
