A thousand years before Matthew and Phoebe first arrived in Chestnut a powerful vampire was imprisoned in an underground maze which that vampire's wife, Madam Empousa and his son, Frank are now seeking to free him from. Sara's twin sister Sarah becomes unwittingly involved in the plot to free the vampire, and as Phoebe opens a small café in Nigel's Olde Mystical Emporium plots and sub-plots start to develop which will challenge everyone. As Sara embarks on another quest aided and abetted by Tristan the troll, Beryl the banshee and Dirk the hare, Phoebe becomes interested in baking bread and Faye becomes an avid gardener. With the help of diving sticks Doris finds the missing crop circles that guard the entrance to the maze, and as Sara, Dirk, Beryl and Tristan enter the maze to ring a lost bell they do not realise just how much danger they are in or how alone they are, but they must risk everything to save Sarah whose lifeforce is slowly ebbing away.
