The pumps have run for a hundred years. Nobody's ever heard them stop.

Wade Sipes has been in half the basements in the county this spring, and he knows what wrong water looks like. The water in Dessie Hobbs's basement is wrong - too still, too patient, standing where no water should reach. The sump is dead. So is the one at the Fry place. And out at the district pump house, where three great engines have held the river out of forty thousand drained acres since before anyone living was born, the gauges have started telling a quiet, impossible story.

A century ago, the district drained the bottoms - took a wetland the size of a township away from the river, ditched it, diked it, and dressed it in corn - and the county that grew up on that ground has forgotten it ever was anything else. The pumps are just the sound under everything, steady as a heartbeat, and about as noticed.
