Aurora Voss can hold a piece of sea glass and give you the rope locker it sat in, the bad winter it survived, and the man who sold the boat and regretted it for nine years. What she cannot give you is how. Nobody taught her the deep reading. It was issued.

So when Brother Coll asks to be her apprentice, she says yes, and discovers within a week that she has no method, no vocabulary and one very bad instinct: when he fails, she takes the piece out of his hands. The work keeps coming out right. He gets steadily worse. Neither of them notices.

Then the thing beneath the water asks for a stretch of the fleet's best ground to be closed for a season. The pact names Aurora the voice of both sides, and a constituent part cannot recuse itself. The harbour master is the fleet's advocate by office and shares her headland by every other arrangement. Tidewatch is entirely reasonable about all of it, which is worse than if it were not.

The only person who ever taught this craft properly walked out of Tidewatch forty years ago without explaining why. What she left is a sealed section of the temple archive, a box in Maren Osk's attic that has been moved eleven times and never opened, and a small piece of glass that a crab keeps putting back in the middle of the bench.

Craft on the page, hands and glass and patient failure. A long loud festival on the year's longest day with the question still unsettled. A town that shows up without taking sides. And an answer, arriving forty years late, for somebody who stopped expecting one.

Book Three of the Tidewatch trilogy, and the last. A finished ending.

For readers of Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries, Legends & Lattes and The House in the Cerulean Sea. Nobody is in danger. The ache is forty years old and belongs to someone else.
