The letters have been previously studied from an historical point of view, but in this volume the author concentrates on the letters as examples of Byzantine literature. The book attempts to place an epistolary text in a succession of literary and historical contexts, as well as to prove the reliability of any rhetorical text for straightforward biography. In addition, an analysis is also made of the personal networks of Theophylacht.
